#ScrewCancer
My piece depicts a breast cancer awareness ribbon, with cherry blossoms around it. The most obvious element is the color scheme I chose. The most obvious principle is the unity of the quote that goes along with the ribbon. To create this piece I started sketching ribbons that I had seen online but none of them were what I wanted so I decided to just start sketching my own and let it flow the way I wanted it to. So after I got the ribbon I wanted and the quote I wanted I went ahead and lightly sketched it on my canvas to then proceed to start painting my first layer. I continued adding layers to get the fullness I wanted in my piece. My inspiration for this piece was to include my grandmother in at least one of my pieces. My grandmother was my heart and after I lost her due to cancer I was in a bad place and for a long time, I didn't understand because at the time of her death I was only 10 years old. I painted the ribbon pink for the awareness of her breast cancer which is first cancer that she was diagnosed with. Around the ribbon, I wrote breast, lung, and brain because those were the all the cancers that she was attacked by. I put the cherry blossoms and the fallen blossoms around my piece because they have a short life and after their beauty starts to peak the blossoms start to fall. This matches my Grandma because me personally I feel as if her life here on earth was too short, and she was her strongest while fighting the battle of cancer. Lastly, the date at the bottom is the date my grandma gained her wings and left us.My goal as an artist was to have a piece that made people stop and realize the pain that comes with cancer not only the patient but to the family of the patient as well. Also to have a piece that conveyed a real meaning to me. I feel as if I was successful because my piece does have lots of meaning and is very special to me.By painting this picture I learned that when you actually sit and think about the meaning of your piece it will be so much more rewarding and you'll have more fun because you will be so focused that nothing else will matter and you know there are no guidelines and you can add whatever you feel needs to be in it, because no one else really knows what anything means to you so you let your work do the talking for you.
Queen Naija
My piece depicts a young female singer posing in a modeling way. The most obvious element is value. The most obvious principle is contrast.
To create this piece I started my griding out my paper, I then proceeded to graph my whole portrait out with an H pencil to assure me I was on track. Then I started on my facial features and put in the details. I then proceeded to add my shading and adding the details to the tattoo.
My inspiration for this piece was to draw someone I look to as a role model. The emotion I tried to convey was the strength in the face of a young female that has conquered so much but still came out on top.
My goal as an artist was to accomplish a more realism than I did in my previous portrait I drew when I was a freshman. I feel as if I did reach my goal because although my piece isn't complete it still has so much more realism than my previous piece.
By drawing this piece I learned that it's okay to go bigger when trying something new because even though it doesn't always come out in your favor it still makes you a better artist, so I learned to never back down because you can do anything you want in art. Overall I feel as if I succeeded with this piece because I learned so much in the course of the 7 days working on this piece and I really applied myself not only in class but I worked outside of class which is something I don't usually do for elective classes.
We the 1st People
My piece depicts a young Native American. The most obvious element is the color scheme I used. The most obvious principle is the pattern I used in certain parts of my project.
To create this piece I started by sketching 4 different angles of my picture in my sketchbook. I then proceeded to lightly sketch my piece on my canvas board just so I would, for the most part, know where I was when I started painting. Then I painted my background with a light nude brown then went back in and added a darker brown to show texture. So now I started my details and lastly I put outlines to reflect graffiti.
My inspiration for this piece was to paint a piece that I could relate to. The emotion I tried to convey was the pain Native Americans feel because we are looked over so much by people of different races.
My goal as an artist was to accomplish a piece that would make me feel as if I was representing my culture. I feel as if I did reach my goal because I really represented us Lums.
By drawing this piece I learned that Native American art is a very beautiful thing and is very unnoticed. Overall I feel as if I succeeded with this piece and I worked long and hard on this piece and never gave up one time.
Crying for our people
My piece pictures a wolf in the late night. The background is black to resemble a dark night.
The wolf is standing on the edge of a mountain although it's not very clear. My most obvious element used in this piece is the color of my wolf. Contrast is the most obvious principle. I blended warm colors to make my wolf stand out.
I created my piece using Oil Pastels. I used a few techniques, I used light pressure then heavy pressure. Lastly, I used sgraffito to add a quote in my wolf.
My inspiration for my piece was to create a piece that had some type of meaning behind it. I added a quote in sgraffito to try and give a relaxing meaningful quote that explains my piece even more.
My goal overall for my project was really just to create a decent piece. I wasn't very familiar with oil pastels, so it was a very week. I feel as if I did reach my goal because although it's not the very best piece its good to me because I tried my best and gave it everything I had.
This wasn't really what I planned out for it to be. Although it's an all right piece I had different intentions things didn't go the way I planned so I had to come up with a different plan quick. I probably won't use Oil Pastels in the future not unless I have to because I just don't like them, I'm more of a nice and neat person and oil pastels are very messy to me.
This is us
My piece is a collage of different things that mean a lot to me. My heritage is something I value, it's what makes me who I am.
In my piece, I have a few things that really reflect who I am. I have a tomahawk with the year 1956, which is the year my tribe was officially recognized as a tribe. I have 4 names in it which are the names of my 4 grandparents because they are the start of who I am. I also have a dream catcher that has Lumbee in the middle and also has " people of the dark water" because we as Lumbees are the people of the dark water. The rest of my main piece is self-explanatory. The most obvious element is of course lines. The most obvious principle is some of the patterns.
I created this piece with sharpies. I started by graphing my circle out then I washed my background with watercolor, I proceeded to fill in my circle with my subject matter.
My inspiration for this piece was to really show something's that most people don't know about us Lumbee's. I added words to give even more clarity.
My goal for this piece at first was to just create something that was good enough because I don't really like line drawing but the more I researched the more I wanted to add onto. I feel like I honestly succeeded because it's better than I pictured.
During this project, I studied Shawn Coss a stylish artist. Overall my piece is very good and to me, it's great because it really has so much meaning that some people will never understand.
Away at ocean
My piece pictures a dolphin doing a spin in the air. The background is the ocean and the sunset of a late evening.
The dolphin is flipping enjoying the late day and the warm water. My most obvious element is the value in my background. My balance is my most obvious principle. I blended my colors to make the sunset visible.
I created my piece using Watercolor. I washed my paper with little color and lots of water. After it dried I started to add more color to make it darker. I also used masking fluid so I could keep my sunlight while washing it.
My inspiration for this piece was to create a good piece. I'm not very familiar with watercolor so it was a challenge overall. This was very hard and it didn't come out as expected.
My goal really was to just try my best and create a piece that was conveyed something important to me. My picture is one of my lifetime goals because I can't wait to go to an Island with the family that I created and watch the dolphins jump while the sun is setting, and I hear my kids laughing and playing while the waves are crashing.
ClareBare
My piece is a picture of my celebrity crush. The background is a bright red which makes him stand out.
Clarence is at a photo shoot and is casually posing. My most obvious element is the clean lines that outline his head, shirt, and beard. The most obvious principle is the unity of him in the middle of this bright background. I made the background a bright color on purpose to make him stand out.
I created my piece using glue and magazines. I sketched my picture out first and then started tearing semi-big pieces and glued them down to my background. I then started gluing smaller pieces.
My inspiration for this piece was to try something a little different because I usually lean toward doing Native American pieces. So I challenged myself by doing something completely different. So far I've done really well.
My goal was to have a nice piece in the end. Although I'm not 100% done to me it's really good. This picture is of my celebrity crush, I literally watch every video or vlog he posts on youtube. This project will be a success once I finish.
Oreo Jar
My piece depicts an oreo cookie jar. The most obvious element is the form. The most obvious principle is the pattern I used on the oreo's to add texture.
To create this piece I started by sketching the 4 different angles of my piece in my sketchbook. I then got a small slab of clay and trace out my circle then cut it out. I then proceeded to start adding coils & blending them in to create my oreo's. I added lines and patterns to add texture to the Oreos. Lastly, I made the lid and added a mini Oreo to create the handle.
My inspiration for this piece was to just create something different and cool. I wanted others to see the joys of having an Oreo cookie jar to put your Oreo's in.
My goal was to make a jar that was neat and cleanly blended. Also to create something I could use. I feel as if I reached my goal.
By creating this jar I learned although something seems or looks easy it can sometimes be complicated. At first I was having a hard time trying to get the "perfect" coils, but I came up with my own way to make the best coils. It was a relief once I figured my own way out. Overall I feel as if this project was a success because I didn't give up and I pushed through and turned out with one heck of a cookie jar.
Im Coming back!
My piece depicts a person running from the morgue that was supposed to be dead. The most obvious element is the color scheme I used. The most obvious principle is the pattern of the floor.
To create this piece I started by sketching 4 different angles of my picture in my sketchbook. I then proceeded to lightly sketch my piece on my final piece. Then I started adding color by using the Prisma pencils. I needed different colors so I chose to use colored pencils.
My inspiration for this piece was to create a fun piece that meant something to me. The emotion I tried to convey was the joy all the Grey's Anatomy watchers would feel if Derek Shepard would run back in the hospital.
My goal as an artist was t accomplish a piece that would reflect the show that is near and dear to my heart. I feel as if I was very successful because my piece has humor and had detail to show ho this man is.
By drawing this piece I learned that foreshortening is way more fun than it looks and that it can get a little confusing if you don't stay focused. Overall I feel as if this piece was a success because I put forth all my effort and gave it my all & it turned out alright,
